On August 5, SanDisk reported robust fiscal Q4 2026 results. Despite a 51% increase in revenue compared to the previous quarter and a gross margin of 84.6%, the company's stock dropped nearly 8% during extended trading hours. The reaction sends a warning that exceptional growth may already be heavily priced in.

There is a noticeable gap between market reactions and fundamental performance. The main reason for this discrepancy is investors' doubts about the company's future financial outlook and valuation levels, as well as concerns that expectations regarding AI-related themes may be overestimated.

About SanDisk: A Business Overview

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in California, USA, SanDisk is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of NAND Flash memory and storage solutions. After being acquired by Western Digital, the company became independent again and was relisted in February 2025 (NASDAQ: SNDK). Since its return to the public market in 2025, SanDisk’s technology can be found wherever data storage is required. Whether it is smartphones, laptops, electric vehicle navigation systems, or cloud servers supporting artificial intelligence computing, all rely on its storage technology.

SanDisk has historically been affected by the cyclical nature of the memory industry, with profitability often impacted by fluctuations in NAND prices. However, in recent years, the rapid growth of AI servers, cloud computing, and data center demand has significantly increased demand for high-capacity storage solutions, allowing the company to regain market attention.

SNDK Stock Performance

Since the beginning of 2026, SanDisk has benefited from the continued growth in demand for AI storage, coupled with the gradual optimization of the supply and demand structure of the NAND flash memory market. Consequently, its stock price has exhibited a robust bullish trend, establishing itself as one of the most notable performers in the U.S. semiconductor sector.

So far this year, SanDisk's stock price has surged by as much as 469%. When the time frame is extended to the past year, the cumulative gain exceeds 3,108%. Following the sharp rise in its share price, market expectations of the company's future earnings performance and management's operational outlook have increased significantly, resulting in greater scrutiny of financial disclosures.

On Wednesday, SanDisk's stock price dropped by more than 7% during after-hours trading, falling below $1,300. By the close of regular trading, its shares had declined by 5.4%. This reflects a shift in market sentiment, as a growing number of investors reconsider whether the surge in demand for memory chips driven by the AI wave can sustain its current high-growth momentum in the long term.

On August 5, SanDisk reported robust fiscal Q4 2026 results. The company's revenue in the fourth quarter surged 3.7 times year-on-year, rising from $1.9 billion to $8.97 billion and exceeding the market analysts' expectation of $8.48 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $39.25, surpassing analysts' forecasts of $34.96 and significantly outperforming last year's level of $0.29.

The current wave of artificial intelligence (AI) enthusiasm is driving up demand for critical components, such as memory chips, which are facing a shortage. Leading cloud service providers, such as Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet, are investing billions of dollars to expand their data centers, which is directly fueling a sustained rise in demand for related hardware.

Tight market conditions, driven by supply and demand pressures, have also prompted hard disk suppliers to raise prices, which has become one of the key drivers behind SanDisk's explosive growth in recent years.

SanDisk's fourth-quarter revenue for its data center business unit reached $2.98 billion, surpassing market expectations of $2.74 billion and doubling the previous quarter's revenue.

Regarding guidance, SanDisk expects revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 to be between $10.3 billion and $10.8 billion, with a midpoint of $10.55 billion; non-GAAP gross margin is expected to be 83.0%-85.0%; non-GAAP diluted EPS is expected to be $44 to $46.

Why SanDisk's Stock Plunged Nearly 8% Despite Q4 Earnings Beat?

Although SanDisk's financial performance was strong, the decline in the stock price primarily reflects a reassessment of market expectations for future growth rather than an improvement in the company's quarterly results.

Market expectations had already been reflected in advance.

SanDisk's stock had previously surged as the market anticipated high demand for AI storage. Even after the company released its earnings report, investors may still sell shares due to "overwhelmingly positive news."

2027 Guidance Falls Short of Expectations

Even though the fourth quarter's revenue and profit performance exceeded market expectations, the company's forecasted revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 was slightly below Wall Street's already elevated expectations. This sparked concerns among investors about a potential slowdown in future growth momentum.

Following the earnings report release, the stock price clearly corrected during after-hours trading and the following day's regular session. It closed at $1,350.50, reflecting investor selling pressure as short-term profits were realized after bullish sentiment was absorbed.

SanDisk Future Outlook

After experiencing a rapid surge in stock prices earlier, SanDisk saw a significant correction in July, with a cumulative monthly decline of around 47%. This marked the company's weakest monthly performance since its relisting in 2025. This downturn was not primarily driven by deteriorating fundamentals, but rather influenced by multiple market factors. These include the cooling down of the AI-related stock rally, the early exit of funds taking profits, and the growing reassessment by investors of whether memory industry valuations are overvalued. There are also concerns about future capacity expansion pressures and the sustainability of capital expenditures tied to AI.

Looking ahead, SanDisk's management and Wall Street analysts maintain a relatively positive outlook on future SanDisk's stock price movements. The company stated that its performance growth in fiscal year 2026 was driven primarily by technological leadership and the successful transformation of its data center business into a core growth engine. As demand for artificial intelligence computing continues to grow, so does the importance of high-performance storage solutions. SanDisk is gradually shifting its product offerings and resource allocation toward higher-margin enterprise markets and data center applications.

The company expects revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 to be between $10.3 billion and $10.8 billion, with an expected midpoint of approximately $10.55 billion. This is below the market's previous expectation of $10.8 billion to $11.2 billion. Adjusted EPS is expected to be between $44 and $46, which is in line with market expectations but does not reflect further upward revisions. The gross margin is expected to remain between 83% and 85%. Although this is still at historical highs, it has not continued to rise.

Additionally, since the beginning of this year, the company has continued to advance its new long-term commercial cooperation model. After signing five multi-year agreements last quarter, the company added three new customers and expanded two existing partnerships this quarter.

The minimum contract value of the company's eight long-term agreements currently stands at $93.3 billion. This provides high visibility for revenue over the next few years and helps mitigate the storage industry's traditional cyclicality.

The company also announced an additional $14 billion share buyback program, bringing the total authorized scale to $15.5 billion. For SanDisk, which underwent a sharp correction in July, such a substantial buyback program implies that management views the current valuation as attractive and reflects the company's robust cash flow and balance sheet.

From a market analysis perspective, the overall outlook on SanDisk remains positive among Wall Street analysts. According to TipRanks data, 10 out of 12 analysts tracking the company have given it a "buy" rating. Key reasons for continued market optimism include growing enterprise storage demand driven by investments in AI infrastructure, a relatively healthy NAND supply environment, and long-term supply agreements that enhance revenue stability. Investors are optimistic about SanDisk's long-term growth potential in the AI storage market and its ability to mitigate the impact of memory industry cycles.

Is SanDisk Worth Buying Now?

SanDisk currently has long-term growth potential in the AI storage market, but investment value should be evaluated from both growth prospects and valuation risks.

Reasons to Be Bullish

✅ Continued growth in AI data center demand
✅ Rapid expansion of the enterprise SSD market
✅ Improved NAND supply-demand conditions, enhancing pricing power
✅ Long-term supply agreements increasing revenue stability

Key Risks to Consider

⚠️ Significant stock price appreciation in the previous period
⚠️ High market expectations for future growth
⚠️ Continued cyclical fluctuations in the memory industry
⚠️ Strong earnings performance does not necessarily mean immediate stock price gains

SanDisk’s latest financial results indicate that the company is benefiting from increased demand for AI-driven storage. Strong data center business growth, improved profitability, and long-term supply agreements have given SanDisk a new outlook for growth. However, the decline in the stock price after earnings reflects that investors are focusing less on whether the company is growing and more on whether future growth can exceed already high market expectations.

Long-term investors optimistic about AI infrastructure expansion and data center storage demand may still find SanDisk attractive. Short-term investors, however, should be aware of market sentiment and valuation adjustment risks and avoid excessive exposure to AI-related investment themes.
