Gold Price Forecast: The September Fed Call Is Now a Coin Flip — Is $5,000 Still Realistic for 2026?

Spot gold (XAU/USD) is trading around $4,430–$4,460, roughly 3% below last week's high near $4,698 after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish first Jackson Hole speech and the dollar firmed. August was still one of the year's strongest monthly rebounds, but gold sits well below the January 29, 2026 record near $5,600.

Working consensus for year-end 2026 now clusters between $4,500 and $4,900. The bull scenario sits at $5,200–$5,600; the bear scenario near $3,900.

The honest answer to "is $5,000 still on the table?" is yes — but the September FOMC is genuinely a coin flip, and that single decision is worth several hundred dollars either way.

The Fed picture changed in one speech

This matters more than any price target, because it changed the reaction function.

At Jackson Hole on August 28 — his first as Chair, after succeeding Jerome Powell — Warsh said inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target and that the committee must be confident underlying inflation is moving to that objective clearly and at sufficient speed. He acknowledged that summer prints came in better than expected but said they do not show underlying trends have meaningfully improved.

The repricing was immediate. Before the speech, odds of a September hold were near 70%. After it:

  • Kalshi: ~48% odds of a 25bp hike

  • Polymarket: ~49%

  • CME FedWatch: ~56% chance of a quarter-point hike

In other words, a genuine coin flip. The federal funds target range has sat at 3.50%–3.75% since December 2025, and the July 28–29 FOMC held it again on a 9–3 vote, with three members already dissenting in favour of a hike.

The inflation data is not helping gold bulls. July PCE held at 3.7% year over year, topping consensus by 0.1 percentage point, with core at 3.3% — the 65th consecutive month above the Fed's 2% target. Real consumer spending rose less than 0.1%. That combination is a stagflation signal, and it is exactly the setup in which a non-yielding asset struggles against a hawkish central bank.

Every gold forecast built on 2026 rate cuts is now on the wrong side of the argument.

Where the banks actually stand after four rounds of cuts

Published targets were cut hard through June and July, then partly stabilised. Read this as a distribution, not a number — and note the dates.

HouseHorizonTargetNote
Goldman Sachs (19 Jun)End-2026$4,900Cut from $5,400; no Fed cuts modelled in 2026. Hike scenario: $4,400
J.P. Morgan (3 Jul)Q3 / Q4 avg$4,300 / $4,500Replaced the $6,000 path issued three weeks earlier
HSBC (9 Jul)2026 avg / YE$4,560 / $4,7502027 YE $5,025; trading range $3,800–$4,700
Morgan Stanley (20 Aug)Q4 2026$4,450Amy Gower: gold hit the target "faster than expected"; sees above $5,000 in 2027
Wells Fargo (17 Aug)End-2026$4,900–$5,100Cut from $5,300–$5,500
UBS (Aug)Quarterly path$4,600 by DecThen $5,000 by Mar 2027, $5,200 by Jun, $5,400 by Sep 2027
BofA (Aug)End-2026$4,250Already below spot; separate extreme-demand scenario at $8,000 by 2027

Two things worth saying plainly. First, BofA's year-end target sits beneath the current price — a reminder of how fast this market moved. Second, J.P. Morgan cut from $6,000 to $4,500 in under a month. Anyone quoting a single "Wall Street consensus" is flattening a genuine disagreement.

UBS also named the condition that matters more than any number: gold needs roughly 500 tonnes of quarterly investment demand to sustain $5,000 or better. The bank treats pullbacks toward $4,000 as an opportunity to add.

Two dates that decide the next $500

Friday, September 4 — August jobs report. Consensus is roughly +50,000 payrolls with unemployment at 4.1%, after July's shock -23,000. The reaction function is inverted from 2024–25: a strong number raises hike odds and pressures gold; a weak print takes hike risk off the table and supports it.

Wednesday, September 16 — FOMC decision, 2:00 p.m. ET. This is a Summary of Economic Projections meeting, so the dot plot lands alongside the rate call. Goldman's own hike scenario puts gold at $4,400 by year-end. A hold with soft language is what the $5,000 case needs.

Everything between now and then is positioning.

The bull case: official-sector demand does not watch the Fed

Central banks keep buying. Q2 2026 net purchases reached roughly 289 tonnes. Goldman's note models a floor near 50 tonnes a month through 2026 — against a pre-2022 baseline closer to 17 tonnes. China has added about 60 tonnes this year and Poland 82 tonnes, taking its reserves to 632.

ETF flows have actually turned. This is a real change from the first half: gold-backed ETFs took in roughly 70 tonnes across July and August, reversing 93 tonnes of outflows in May and June. Still net negative over the four months, but the direction flipped.

The debasement trade is intact. The Treasury has expanded its bond buyback programme, and questions about fiscal sustainability keep a structural allocation bid under the metal. This is the argument behind the longer-horizon $7,000–$10,000 scenarios — which are scenarios, not base cases, and typically carry 2030 horizons.

Geopolitics has not resolved. The Strait of Hormuz crisis continues to add a risk premium to oil and gold alike.

The bear case has real data behind it

Q2 2026 total gold demand fell to 942 tonnes — the lowest since Q3 2021 — dragged down by weak jewellery demand. Central bank buying does not fully offset softness elsewhere.

Real yields are the problem. The 30-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.2% for the first time since June 2007. Higher yields directly raise the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset, and a hike into sticky inflation intensifies that.

The World Gold Council's own fair-value framework puts gold at roughly $3,895–$4,305 — below where it trades today. That is not a forecast, but it does say the current price already embeds a substantial risk premium.

A firmer dollar caps rallies. Last Friday demonstrated the mechanism in a single session.

A realistic framework for the rest of 2026

  • Fed hikes on September 16. Gold likely retests $4,215 and then the $3,900–$4,200 zone. Goldman's explicit hike case is $4,400 by year-end; UBS flags $4,000 as an accumulation area.

  • Fed holds, data softens, dollar eases. The $4,650–$4,700 ceiling gets tested first; $4,800–$5,000 becomes achievable into Q4. FXEmpire's near-term (1–4 week) range on this path is $4,800–$5,000.

  • A genuine shock — geopolitical escalation or a credit event. The January high near $5,600 comes back into view quickly. Gold does not need the Fed to cooperate if fear does the work.

Base case for year-end sits around $4,500–$4,900, bull case $5,200–$5,600, bear case near $3,900. Targets moved by more than $1,000 within a single quarter this year — treat all of them as scenarios.

FAQ

What is the gold price forecast for the end of 2026?Bank targets now cluster between roughly $4,500 and $4,900 — Goldman at $4,900, J.P. Morgan at $4,500, HSBC at $4,750, UBS at $4,600, Morgan Stanley at $4,450 — with Wells Fargo higher at $4,900–$5,100 and BofA lower at $4,250.

Will gold reach $5,000 in 2026?Possible but not the base case. Most desks that see $5,000 place it in the first half of 2027 rather than Q4 2026, and generally condition it on the Fed holding rather than hiking. UBS puts $5,000 at March 2027 and says it needs about 500 tonnes of quarterly investment demand to hold that level.

Why did gold fall from $4,698?Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole remarks on August 28 lifted rate-hike expectations and firmed the dollar, knocking roughly 3% off the price. September hold odds fell from near 70% to a coin flip.

Will the Fed hike in September 2026?Markets are split. Kalshi puts hike odds near 48%, Polymarket near 49%, and CME FedWatch at about 56%. The decision comes on September 16, with the August jobs report on September 4 as the main input.

What is gold's all-time high?Approximately $5,600 per ounce, set on January 29, 2026. Gold currently trades about 20% below that level.
